Seven

Well, my little shop is humming along, thanks to all of you who have put in orders over the last several weeks. Life has been so very busy, but I am not quite at the point where I can say I am overwhelmed. Having five kids seems to be a new level of insanity, and I suppose I am stating the obvious here, but babies take a lot of work!
However, because I don’t seem to know where to draw a line, a few weeks ago I entered to win a spot in a very large Etsy Christmas Market in Nashville this December. I was a little panicky about doing it, but wanted to see if I could push my business a bit outside my circle of friends and family.
There were two weeks where I didn’t know if I would make the cut or not, and my mind was going a mile a minute trying to think of ways to increase my stock and make my brand look more professional so the market would be profitable for me. I couldn’t tell if I really wanted to make it or not, or if would even be wise at this point in my life, until I received an email last night saying I didn’t make it. My biggest feeling was one of relief, but it did help me to think about ways that I might someday promote my business in other ways.

In the meantime, I still have orders coming in. For instance-
A college friend of mine very generously decided to give me her all Christmas business- meaning a bulk order of dolls. She gave no specifications as to hair color or dress design, so it was fun coming up with something for her.
She and I were both in the music department in college, and both share a love of musicals. So when she gave me an order for seven dolls for seven nieces, I immediately thought of this.

Now there are many things that aren’t exactly PC about this musical, not least of which is the opening anthem- “Bless her beautiful hide”- and continuing on to a mass kidnapping of all the town’s eligible women. (It’s all in good fun, right?)

But the scene I was inspired by was this one-

I have always loved the bright, rainbow-y jewel tones in this scene, with the girls in complementing ginghams. But I didn’t have much gingham on hand, so I just put my dollies in simple jewel toned skirts with black buttoned shoes to match.

There is something so satisfying about rainbow order.

I can tell they are already friends.

I wanted to be able to do a little photo session with them in dancing poses, but they just kept falling over. So here, for your enjoyment, is a little video instead.

Photos, thanks and thoughts

Oh, the blog is suffering. At it’s inception, I somehow had the energy to post three, maybe four posts a week. And now, here I am sneaking in a short one one Saturday night, just to say I posted twice this week. There are many reasons for this. Number one of course being that first trimester pregnancy drains all my energy and creative thought. And second, I have had so many orders that I have hardly had time to think about how tired I am. It’s great!
Thanks to my friends and family, my etsy ratings have gone up and more and more complete strangers are buying from me. I have had orders from unknown people in California, Colorado, Michigan, and even New York city. Three separate orders have come from Canada. They seem to love my horses up there! And with all of those orders combined, we were able to purchase six plane tickets for Christmas, and even have some left over for Christmas presents! So thank you. God provides!
Here are a couple of dolls that I just finished for a good friend.

And I love the green eyes on this young lady.

If I had the time, I would love to start branching out a little more in my options. Maybe after the holidays, and once I am into my second trimester, I can start thinking of new stuff. I have had requests for different kinds of animals, especially foxes. Foxes are so hot right now. (name that movie) But it’s always tricky finding just the right pattern. I would maybe like to try a larger doll as well. Any other requests?

I have also been playing around with different skin tones on the dolls, and I found a lovely cotton in a pale brown that I thought would be nice. I wasn’t sure what ethnicity I was aiming for, but I cut it out, sewed and stuffed it and started in on the hair and eyes. By the time I was finished, I was less than pleased. Somehow, the brownish cotton had morphed into a gray- green color, reminiscent of a corpse.

So if anyone is interested in a doll of this deathly hue, let me know. Maybe I could market her as a vampire or a zombie doll.
I’ve noticed also that the undead are so hot right now.

Christmas is coming….

I am just realizing that we are more than half way through October, and I am still a long way from my “6 plane tickets for Christmas” goal. So I spent some time this week designing some christmas themed dresses, just to remind myself to keep on working, and maybe just remind you folks that the holidays really are just around the corner ; ). I thought to myself, “How do I like to decorate my house for Christmas?” The first thing that came to mind was of course a Christmas tree, so I designed a christmas tree dress.

It’s pretty simple, but if I have time, I’d like to add some beads or sequins or something to make it a little more festive.

Here’s a view from the back if you’re interested.

My next favorite holiday decoration is probably holly, so I went for a very simple skirt and blouse so the sprig of holly could stand out.

I thought it would go well with my red wool horse, but I already sold that one, so I’ll have to make another.

And last, but not least, even though we hardly ever have white Christmases around here, you’ve gotta have snowflakes.

20131020-153856.jpg
Embroidering these little snowflakes made me think that she might need something to keep her warm, so I added a little cape and beret, ’cause I’m a sucker for capes and berets.

So there we are, all ready for the holidays! What are your favorite Christmas decorations?
